A couple of times a year, my Mum, sister and I take a girls’ holiday; one which involves three things which rate highly with most women: relaxation, great food and spa treatments. Last weekend, we met up for one of our bi-annual escapes, spending three days at the Hotel Grand Tirolia in Kitzbühel.
With a rather modest exterior, the Grand Tirolia’s impresses with its interior decor, Alpine ambience and fantastic service, which starts on arrival with valet assistance for my car, help with our luggage, refreshment towels and a personal chaperone who guided us to our room. Our deluxe room – which was more like a 50 m² living room – had a fantastic view from the balcony.
We were spoiled each evening each with a 4-course menu, which was included in our half-board booking. My favourite dishes were the pineapple and carrot soup with ginger, and the baked biscotti dessert. The breakfast buffet scored highly too, with a healthy spread of fresh squeezed juices, which included apple, carrot, plum, kiwi, orange…; and specialist tea blends with unique names like ‘Miade Moni’ (Made by Moni) and ‘Flotte Lotte’ (Food Mill). You can also buy these tasty teas in the hotel shop – they made great gifts for my folks back home.
Speaking of shopping… After a spending spree in Kitzbühel city centre, the hotel spa made the perfect place to retreat to, with a heated outdoor pool, Russian banya (sauna) and herbal steam room. And again, even in the spa, it was the little things that make our stay so special: the attentive towel service; free newspapers and magazines; refreshments which ranged from teas to lime and orange water, and fresh fruit to dried bananas and nuts – the perfect stopgap between sauna sessions. It came as no surprise that the Grand Tirolia was awarded ‘Best Spa & Sport Resort’ in the 2012 Senses Awards.
We were also particularly pleased at the special service we received at check-out. Not only were we helped out with our luggage and car again, but we each received a soft drink for the way home and a jar of Grand Tirolia apricot jam, which helped to extend the holiday feeling that little bit further. I spread the jam on my toast this morning and, with the first bite, memories of my holiday came flooding back. The Grand Tirolia is definitely somewhere I’ll be going back to.
