The longest continuous mountain bike trail in the Alps, Bike Trail Tirol has a total length of around 1,000-kilometers, spread over 32 stages. Some of which are just about feasible as a round day trip. I’d like to introduce you to my three of my favourite tracks:

1. Marienbergjoch – around the Wannig

An absolute classic. Almost 30-kilometers long, with around 1,200-meters of elevation, this exciting ride is packed with scenic attractions. The starting point is Nassereith on the south side of the Fern Pass. After riding past the Marienbergjoch saddle you arrive the basin of the Tirol Ehrwalder Außerfern, returning back on the F pass along the Via Claudia Augusta Roman road. Highlights include the magnificent panoramic views from of the Zugspitze massif in the north and in the Stubai and Ötztal Alps in the south, and you can look forward to inviting swimming lakes in the Fern Pass area.
Refreshments stops: Find local produce for sale at the Marienbergalm pasture and enjoy coffee and cake at Fernstein castle.

2. Maria Waldrast

Departing from Innsbruck, the train to Matrei am Brenner takes around twenty minutes. From here, cycle 700-meters to the Servite Mariawald rest – there’s also a great local inn here. It’s not far to the highest point in the Jöchl forest from here, after which you make a swift descent into the Stubai valley. Riding past the Telfer Wiesen meadows, there isn’t too much climbing to do as you ride past the Kreith and Raitis mountain areas on your return to Innsbruck.
Highlights: Mariawald Abbey below Serles; Telfer Wiesen (glacial larch meadows); the Bergiselsprungschanze (ski jump) and museum just before Innsbruck.
Refreshments: The café at Mariawald Abbey, Kirchbrücke guest house in Bodice (try the trout!) and Riese Haymon guest house below the Bergisels in Innsbruck.

3. Guffertrunde

A dream tour in utter seclusion. This 40km round trip at around 1,000-meters above sea level starts at the Imperial House next to the Brandenberger Ache river (access is via Kramsach in the Inn Valley) . After riding past Steinberg am Rofan – a settlement which proudly describes itself as ‘the most beautiful place in the world’ – ascend to Guffert hut, near the Bavarian border. To finish, roll downhill to return to the Brandenberger Ache river and Imperial House.
Highlights: Nature as far as the eye can see; Steinberg am Rofan and the many inviting places to swim along the Brandenberger Ache river; Imperial House and its impressive surroundings.
Refreshments: Imperial House and Waldhäusl guesthouse in Steinberg.
