Ski Resort Review – What people think of the Obergurgl-Hochgurgl ski area

Last updated 08.11.2017HolgerHolger

Want to know what Obergurgl and Hochgurgl are like? British journalist and filmer Chris Moran and editor James Fage visited the Tirolean ski area and spoke to visitors and locals on the chairlifts, in the bars and on the slopes to get their take on it.

We have summarized the main findings for you:

  • Obergurgl is a ski-in-ski-out resort
  • The area has a super-long ski season from mid-November until mid-April
  • It’s the joint highest ski town in Austria at 2,020-metres in altitude (Kühtai is the same)
  • The clientelle are super friendly, dedicated skiers who’ve often been returning to Obergurgl for years. They must be doing something right!
  • The Top Mountain Star restaurant and viewing deck is one of the most stunning buildings in the world
  • The Nederhütte is one of the Alps’ most famous apres ski venues.
  • Obergurgl is home to one of the most reputable ski schools in the Alps
  • The US ski team bases itself in Obergurgl. Quite the accolade!
  • The top lift is well over 3,000-metres
  • There are photopoints dotted around the ski area, collect all or race between them for a fun week-long adventure!
  • The Hohe Mut Alm restaurant is super high class, high altitude dining at its best.

A head for heights is advantageous for those living in mountainous terrain. Holger Gassler has not but that doesn’t stop him from mountain biking, hiking or, as soon as the first snow hits the ground, hitting the slopes.
