Honestly speaking, sometimes I need a break from the hustle and bustle of ski resorts in Tirol. Beyond skiing and riding, there are countless ways to enjoy our pristine snow, mountains, trails and woodlands. Whether I’m hiking the many different trails designated for winter walking, or snowshoeing in the middle of the woods, the calmness of winter is good for the mind and spirit. And on top of that this is a truly amazing and soothing way to enjoy winter at a slower peace :-).
There’s more than one way to enjoy the snow. I love to immerse myself in the gorgeous nature, dotted by weathered, sun-bleached barns and log cabins, blanketed in snow. Many mountain lodges and cabins don’t close in the winter, which gives an open invitation to anyone who is looking to walk through our winter wanderland. Worthwhile destinations are Gramaialm Alpine Pasture Hut in Falzthurntal Valley or Sunnseit Hut near Hopfgarten, which translates to “Sunny Side Hut”.
You don’t have to give up your love of bagging a peak just because Tirol’s trails are blanketed in snow. Grab a pair of warm, sturdy boots or strap on a pair of snowshoes and hit the trails for a vigorous and rewarding trek through the quiet, pillowy landscape atop Neunerköpfle Peak in Tannheim, das Brentenjoch Col in Kufstein or Gschwandtkopf Peak high above Seefeld. You’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views, fresh air and invigorating exercise.
Snowshoeing is an easy, fun way to enjoy snowy fields and forests. Strap on your snowshoes and enjoy a Romantic Snowshoe Walk into Remote Defereggen Valley, or explore the trails around Wängle and at Kaunergrat Nature Park.
Those wanting to make a trek up but not down are recommended to whizz down the mountain on a sled ;-) … Wonderful trails for walking up on runs for sledding down are found at Latschenhütte bei Imst, at Rodlhütte Bärenbadalm in Lake Achensee Area or the one leading to Strassberghaus Lodge near Wildermieming.
Trails designated for winter walking and snowshoeing can be found throughout the country, but some regions and resorts specialize in magical winter adventures beyond the slopes: Magical Winter in Tirol.
When planning a winter or snowshoe trip, please check local avalanche centers for current avalanche watches and warnings!
