The Eagle Walk celebrates its 10-year anniversary in 2015. Ever wondered what the yellow-paint signs showing an eagle are all about? From day treks to multi-week thru hikes, countless adventurers have found the Eagle Walk to be a great outdoor experience. It offers unparalleled opportunities to explore, experience, and connect with nature. The Eagle Walk has quickly become a must-do hike for anyone wanting true immersion in the best of Tirol.
The Eagle Walk is steep in some places, rugged in most, and Alpine in all. For the ten-year anniversary, the route was simplified from its sometimes confusing original network to two new routes that take the Eagle Walk back to basics with an Alpine focus at its core. Divided into 24 stages between Kaiser Mountain Range and Arlberg and comprised of nine stages between Venediger and Großglockner Mountains in East Tirol, the reloaded Eagle Walk offers an exciting opportunity to get away from it all and experience wilderness in a way that shorter trips often don’t allow.
As the eagle flies, the Eagle Walk runs through Tirol – the whole length of the country, from east to west. Viewing the map, you will realize that the walk symbolizes a proud eagle spreading its wings all over Tirol. Living as he does on the tops of lofty mountains, amid the solitary grandeur of nature, the eagle represents strength and courage—and that’s just what is needed to hike the Eagle Walk!
Thinking of the numerous expert rated trails, the many daily stages and the elevation gain… it is clear that the Eagle Walk long-distance hike is an exercise in endurance and perseverance, both mentally and physically. But it’s not all about pain and suffering—the scenic rewards are far from little—they’re gigantic! Hardly any other long distance hiking in the Alps is designed so that it always results in a constant altitude along the ridge, allowing hikers to enjoy an eagle’s perspective of Tirol’s most beautiful Alpine scenery.
Tirol’s mountains are full of stirring tales and intriguing characters – accounts of great intrepidity, fellowship, and a spirit of adventure. Celebrating a rich tradition of bravery, thirst of knowledge and pursuit of glory, each stage of the Eagle Walk tells the stories of the pioneers who first scaled the heights of Tirol. The Eagle Alpine History is marked by visionary early summiteers and the work of countless passionate individuals who cut trails and built shelters for people to experience the beauty the mountains have to offer. History continues to be made with each hiker who travels the trails.
You may have noticed that the Eagle Walk’s hiking resources are all new as well. For each stage, you will find a brief introduction to the area, trail descriptions, trailheads, access points, services and accommodations, and GPS tracks for download on www.tyrol.com. In addition to the route descriptions, you will also find specific information about the trail that will add to your awareness, called Eagle Alpine History and Eagle Kick.
