Schönherr Haus in Neustift in Stubaital Valley is a very aesthetically pleasing place. It’s a space to relax, a space to enjoy, a space to linger. It’s a contemporary spin on typical Stubai mountain living, it’s traditional comfort with a modern twist. It’s striking, engaging and intriguing without being cynical or cheerful. In fact, it’s a magnificent place designed with love and originality. Something else striking about this magnificent hotel is the entrance area, marked by its abundant use of glass. It seems as if it has been carved out from the old farmhouse. Harmonious in colour and shape yet striking, its design brings a modernistic touch to the whole structure. It’s surprising. It’s a beautiful place that is reminiscent of traditional times. A place where generations were made to feel truly at home. Every aspect of the hotel’s design is intended to cultivate the slippage between old and new. The final result is a warm and inviting mountain getaway with a touch of metropolitan sophistication.
Amaranth Pudding at the Parlour.
The breakfast room at Schönherr Haus proves that natural wood accents don’t have to come off rustic — combined with green velvet, they can also be totally sophisticated. Here, the traditional concept of a timber-panelled Tirolean parlour meets functional loft-style. The casual dining room seamlessly blends modern, rustic and industrial styles in an open space, with long communal tables. The green tiled bar front is the eye-catching piece in the room, reminiscent of a trendy coffee bar in Berlin or of a mid-century coffeehouse in Rome. “Stop,” I said to myself. “Don’t compare this place. Enjoy it right here and right now.” Convinced of having just the right attitude for Schönherr Haus, I sit down in the corner of the parlour with a bowl of amaranth pudding and listen to the lady of the house, Patricia Schönherr.
Mountains, Passion and Attention to Detail.
Patricia Schönherr wouldn’t call herself a lady, I guess. After all, she takes lavish care over all the aspects of the business—and if it’s only adding a tiny cookie to the saucer’s edge. It’s her special attention to detail that makes this place so special. This desirable middle between two extremes, one of excess and the other of deficiency. The art of finding the golden middle is particularly challenging in the hotel industry. Obviously, Patricia Schönherr possesses this unique combination of naturalness, curiosity and elegance. She designed the entire hotel with relaxation and calmness in mind. It’s the type of place where one can feel completely comfortable as if each piece of furnishing, fixture, and choice of hue, was specifically selected for them. From the guest rooms to the apartments, Schönherr Haus is a delicate and intimate place. It’s what one would call a “home away from home.”
Hey, That’s My Happy Place.
Patricia Schönherr tells me that the concept of her hotel evolved out of her desire to create a place where she would want to spend a holiday. All rooms exude a mix of contemporary and rustic ambiance. Usually, such a delicate combo is not easy to pull off, but in the case of Schönherr Haus, it comes out beautifully. Indeed, every architectural and interior detail of the Freiger Apartment for example, speaks of not only functionality but also aesthetics highlighted by the tactile experience that each item expresses. There’s nothing pretentious about the interior design of this space. It’s minimalist, pleasant, light, and engaging. In fact, it is a stunning work of art. The space can be rented on a B&B basis or as a self-catering unit with kitchenette. The eclectic simplicity of the interiors is also reflected in the breakfast’s offering, which is based on seasonal, local and organic products. Patricia goes the extra mile to bring in high-quality ingredients, like coffee from Italy, freshly baked breads and pastries and Austrian apple juice. There’s a belt-testing array of different options, from freshly cut charcuterie specialties, jams and preserves, pasture-raised eggs and mountain cheese to delectable cakes. Yummy. I never want to leave this place. Never ever.
