Five Hikes for Water Lovers

Last updated 14.12.2018MichaelMichael

Splish-splash! A sound enjoyed by many hikers. Especially at the end of an exhausting tour, when they like nothing better than cooling off in a mountain lake – an abundance of which can be found in Tirol. The following refreshing walks are highly recommended:

1. Cool down with a mountain hut visit

If an artist wanted to paint a classic mountain lake, Seebensee would be the perfect model. Rugged rock formations rise on one side, with views of the Zugspitze massif on the other. To top it all, Lake Seebensee shimmers brilliant turquoise blue in the sunshine. The walk to the lake leads up from Ehrwalder Alm along a wide path and can be made shorter by using the Ehrwalder Almbahnen cable car. Those wanting to visit even greater heights can continue from Lake Seebensee to the Coburger Hut.

2. White roses and two lakes

A chairlift shortens the ascent to Kleine Mutzkopf from Nauders on the Reschenpass. A circular hiking trail leads from there to Lake Schwarzen See. Nowhere else in the Alps do white water lilies thrive at this altitude. The trail continues to Lake Grünen See – our bathing tip – and back downhill to Nauders.

3. Natural gem with providence

A number of underground water sources feed Lake Hintersteiner See. Anyone who dives here enjoys underwater visibility of up to ten metres. Hikers need about one and a half hours from the parking lot at Seestüberl to complete the circular hike around Lake Hintersteiner See – and only have to surmount 200 metres in altitude difference along the way.

4. Ridge walk with mirror effect

It doesn’t get more idyllic than this: the limestone peaks of the Kalkkögel are reflected in the waters of Lake Salfeinssee. Visits can be combined with a circular walk through the protected Kalkkögel area. The view from Lake Salfeinssee extends over the Inntal valley from the Mieminger Range to the Karwendel Mountains.

5. Excellent triple lake hike

An alpine trail leads from the top station of the Neunerköpfle gondola lift to Schochenspitze Peak. Afterwards, we pass the smallest of the three lakes, the Lache. The trail then leads to the Landsberger Hut, past Lake Traualpsee and on to Lake Vilsalpsee. The return walk is so much easier after a refreshing dip in the cool waters.
