There are end-of-season parties, and then there’s Snowbombing. During the second week of April, party animals, music lovers and snowsports fans flock to Mayrhofen to enjoy a week of great music in epic locations. Where else can you catch a Mark Ronson set in an igloo, followed by a rave night with Fatboy Slim in an Alpine forest? There are even daily warm-downs on the mountain with Mr Motivator.

But if you fancy a day away from the festivities, Mayrhofen has plenty of other amazing activities on offer. Luxury spa days, schnapps tasting sessions and wild toboggan nights can all help to make your trip a real week to remember. Read on to discover more about Snowbombing and about some of the other awesome things to do in Mayrhofen.

Snowbombing: The world’s greatest show on snow

Sun, snow and a really amazing line-up—Snowbombing knows how to create the perfect music festival.  Snowbombing takes place in April (this year it’s 13th-18th April) when the sun is high and the weather is ideal for chilling out on the mountain. Head to the Snow Park Terrace or the Mountain Stage to catch some rays.

Then there’s the snow. Mayrhofen has lots of snow, even in April. The highest slopes in resort are up at around 2500m, which means plenty of the white stuff for you to enjoy. And of course, the snowsure Hintertux Glacier is right around the corner.

But the highlight of Snowbombing is its great line-up. With previous acts including Fatboy Slim and Pendulum, this year’s event is being headlined by Britpop legend Liam Gallagher. He’s joined by electronic duo Chase and Status, drum and bass act Rudimental, plus bands like The Streets and Foals. Basically, amazing music wherever you look. And in the unlikely event that none of that sounds good to you, then you can always enjoy pop’s greatest hits with Pat Sharp in the “Fun Haus”.

Sample a schnapps at the Stiegenhaushof distillery

You’re going to be drinking plenty of schnapps at Snowbombing, so why not visit Mayrhofen’s premier distillery while you’re there? The Stiegenhaushof have been distilling schnapps for three generations, and their specialities include hay schnapps (yes, you read that right) and Alpine pine schnapps. Sounds weird, tastes delicious.

You can have a guided tour around the Stiegenhaushof and check out how they make their precious beverages. And of course, there’s plenty of time to try the schnapps out for yourself. There are many weird and wonderful varieties to choose from, and the tasting is accompanied by some local meats and cheeses. Oh, and if you’re really lucky, you might get some oom-pah music for the full Tirolean experience.

Go night tobogganing in Gerlosstein

Forget about your plastic sledge in the local park. This is tobogganing Mayrhofen style. First, hire a fancy wooden toboggan, or “rodel”, from a local shop (we recommend one per person unless you’re really feeling the need for speed). Take the Gerlosstein cable car up to the top of the mountain and pause a moment to enjoy the beautiful nighttime view of the valley below. Then fling yourself off down the 7km floodlit snowy track and enjoy the ride.

In principle, tobogganing is quite easy: you just stick out one foot to steer. In practice, it’s an adrenaline-filled race down the mountain, involving tight corners, icy patches and sheer drops on one side. Which is what makes it so great! And also why you might feel the need to pop into the Schlittenstadl restaurant halfway down for a quick schnapps (another one).
