June is a month when everyone is out and about. Hikers explore the mountains, where only a few patches of snow cling stubbornly to the high slopes. Mountain bikers whizz down the region’s trails at full speed. And when the summer solstice arrives and the longest day meets the shortest night, fires are lit in the mountains as part of an ancient tradition dating back centuries. Those who like to burn up the dancefloor will enjoy the Heart of Noise Festival, which in 2019 bears the motto “Don’t stop the dance”. Hot action for cool heads – that is what June is all about in Tirol.
Sölden offers mountain bikers not only a unique network of trails but also the opportunity to become citizens of the Bike Republic Sölden. Equipped with a Bike Republic passport, riders can explore this huge region at the end of the Ötztal Valley comprising nine artificial and 15 natural trails. Highlights include the Leiterberg Trail, one of Tirol’s Great Trails as chosen by a panel of experts. The season begins with a bang in the Bike Republic. This time of year is famous for its alpine roses, which can be seen in full bloom on the lower slopes of the Alps. In the period around the longest day and the shortest night of the year, local people climb up into the mountains to light fires and welcome the summer. In Innsbruck (22 June) the Nordkettenbahn cable car operates into the night, giving visitors the chance to observe this incredible spectacle from high in the mountains. The fires are often arranged in words and symbols to commemorate important events such as the fight for independence against French and Bavarian troops around 1800. Religious motifs such as doves and crosses also common. In the Tannheimer Tal Valley, one of Europe’s most beautiful high valleys, countless fires are lit on 29 June. In early June it’s not the mountains but the dancefloors of Tirol that are on fire at the annual Heart of Noise Festival. Don’t stop the dance!” is the motto from 7 to 9 June at venues such as the new Haus der Musik. Heart of Noise is an electronic music festival famous for its experimental beats, surprise line-ups and sensational atmosphere to rival any music festival in Europe.
Mountain bike fans keen to see the world’s best freestylers in action should head to the Bikepark from 12 to 16 June for Crankworx, the number one international gravity biking event. Downhill fans and top pros will descend on Innsbruck for a week of insane action.
