Full of jaw-dropping scenery, breathtaking vistas and amazing downhill cruising, Tirol has long been a sought-after destination for mountain bikers. With an incomprehensible amount of 5,800 kilometers of trails, this is truly a mountain biker’s playground. That landscape also makes it a no-brainer for great e-biking, which enables riders to cover more ground in less time. While Tirol offers endless tracks of varying levels, consider these five beautiful rides, which will take you through stunning scenery between Außerfern and Kitzbühel Alps, Lienz Dolomites and Karwendel Mountain Range.
1. Tuftlalm Alpine Pasture Hut
Ammergebirge Mountain Range
The initial climb from the trailhead at Ehrwald is steep but pays off immediately with excellent views of Zugspitz Range. Wild and rare orchids bob near the trail and provide a welcome distraction from the continuous uphill plodding, as do the ever-improving views. If you have reached Tuftlalm Alpine Pasture Hut at an elevation of 1,496 meters, the rewards are many. Refuel over fresh milk, homemade cheese and tasty Kaiserschmarrn and take advantage of the outstanding vista. Plus, you can charge your e-bike battery at this biker-friendly place.
2. Bayreuther Hut
Rofan Mountain Range
Here, the forces of nature have conspired to create an improbably gorgeous landscape—and Bayreuther Hütte (elev. 1,576 meters) is wrapped in this breathtaking and sun-drenched scenery at the heart of Rofan Mountain. You’ll get a superb panorama over Inntal Valley along the way. If you are still feeling energetic, you can leave your bike at the hut and take the scenic walk to Zireiner See lake, an aquatic gem (and a great place to cool off on a hot summer’s day!).
3. Navis Alpine Pasture Loop
Located in Inner Navistal Valley, this ride of intermediate difficulty is for real explorers. The dirt road grinds across pristine Alpine meadows and offers breathtaking views of the Tux and Stubai Alps and down into Wipptal Valley. Aptly named “Navis Alpine Pasture Loop”, this well maintained route links various Alpine pastures. At the end of this trail you will find Naviser Hut, a friendly mountain refuge. Peeralm, Klammalm, Poltenalm and Stöcklalm all are located along the loop—lovely trailside eateries where you can refuel over homemade cheese, butter and bacon.
4. Hochstein Hut
This ride takes you from Lienz via Bannberg to Hochstein Hut at an elevation of 2,023 meters, with a few steep sections to get your heart rate up. If it’s a hot day, try this exposed trail in the early morning. The tour has very few technical spots but to enjoy this ride you will want to have a good level of fitness. When you have reached Hochstein Hut, you can reap your rewards: The regional delicacies served here taste even better after the effort of the ride. Bonus: Unbeatable views over Lienz and the Lienz Dolomites are also on tap here.
5. Karwendelhaus Lodge
Karwendel Mountain Range
Karwendelhaus Lodge is a fine mountain lodge, situated at an elevation of 1,765 meters. Rated intermediate, this scenic ride departs from Scharnitz and takes you across Karwendel Mountain Range’s breathtaking wilderness areas. Over 100 years old, the shelter has been awarded the seal of environmental approval. Karwendelhaus is an impressive hut deservedly popular with day trippers either hiking or mountain biking. It boasts a truly stunning location with a wonderful paneled interior.
